Waratahs' places up for grabs
January 31, 2002

NSW coach Bob Dwyer has announced that all but four positions are available in the Waratahs line-up for their opening Super 12 match against the Chiefs.

With the Waratahs squad increased to 43 this year, Dwyer (pictured) said competition was fierce for most positions and he has a lot of work to do before selecting his top 15. "I would say there's probably four finalised," he said.

"I've got a number of personnel in my mind finalised, but where they'll play is another consideration. I think it's the hardest job I'll have this year, working out what the best 15 is.

"I'd go as far as to say we'll definitely make a mistake or two because there is that many decisions to be made there is nil chance of being right in every one of them."

Dwyer will have his first look at his charges this year on Saturday when they take on NSW Country in Wollongong. They will then travel to New Zealand to play trials against Auckland and Canterbury.

The Waratahs then embark on a rugged start to the Super 12, playing their first match on Feb 23 against the Chiefs in Rotorua, followed by two matches in South Africa. "History has shown that we can handle it," Dwyer said.

"The two away games in the trial add to the travel and the workload, but we've got a strategy for that. You've got to win your away games sometime so it might as well be at the start than at the finish."
