Cats' injury crisis deepens
February 3, 2002

The Cats's injury crisis deepened on Friday with Grant Bartle and Eugene Meyer sidelined after the Cats' 39-25 loss to the Sharks at Ellis Park in a pre-seaon friendly.

Bartle, according to coach Frans Ludeke, has a cracked rib and Meyer broke his nose.

Bartle took a knock after scoring one of his sides four tries while Meyer emerged from a tackle with a bloodied and broken nose.

Ludeke was not that concerned about Meyer's injury but said that Bartle's leaving the field meant that he was not yet certain who the best scrumhalf in the region was.

The Cats, whose staggering injury toll now numbers a dozen, were completely outplayed by last year's beaten Super 12 finalists.

Their performance, however, did not seem to worry Ludeke.

"It's better that we make our mistakes now before the competition," was Ludeke's pragmatic response. (Sapa)
