'Win was most important' - Humphreys
February 3, 2002

Ireland's man of the match David Humphreys admitted today's victory was more than his team could have hoped for in their first game of this year's Lloyds TSB Six Nations Championships.

"The most important thing was the win," Humphreys said after the 54-10 victory at Lansdowne Road served notice of Ireland's title aspirations.

"It was important to set our stall out early on, and we got a couple of scores early on.

"That was beyond anything we could have expected ourselves. There was a lot of pressure on us to perform, and for the most part I think we performed fairly well.

"There was a quiet period in the middle of the game, but we came through that and finished strongly at the end."

The win came in coach Eddie O'Sullivan's first game in charge, but Humphreys felt the side benefited from his previous involvement with the team.

"With Eddie being involved in the background there were not going to be a huge of amount of changes - and the changes made were much smaller," Humphreys added on BBC2.
