Sailor win trial selection
February 4, 2002

Wendell Sailor's crash course in rugby union will continue this week after he was selected in the Queensland squad for a trial in New Zealand.

Sailor is vying with Ricky Nalatu and Damian Smith for a wing spot opposite Ben Tune for the Reds Super 12 campaign which gets underway in three weeks.

Sailor has already proved a huge promotional success with more than 20,000 people watching the World Sevens at Ballymore at the weekend.

Sailor scored a bustling try for the Reds in a trial hitout on Friday night and collected two touchdowns yesterday when Australia won the sevens final 28-0 over New Zealand.

Australian Sevens captain Richard Graham, who is also in the Reds squad, has been impressed with the new recruit's attitude.

"Wendell is still on a learning curve, there's no doubting that," said Graham.

"He is a bit flat (positionally) in attack and he is still coming to terms with the breakdown.

"But he is a big, strong man and give him a season or two and I think he'll be up there in the top side.

"He's very keen to learn, he's like a sponge. He needs more game time and he could stand deeper in attack and run onto the ball and get himself more involved.

"You want to get the ball in rugby if you stand out on the wing and sometimes you've got to go looking for it."

"We'll try to play something close to our starting fifteen at some stage against Auckland but the reality is there are several spots in the team that are still wide open," said McBain.
