Taylor signs new deal with Edinburgh

Edinburgh Gunners have confirmed Lions number eight Simon Taylor has signed a new contract with the club.

The 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a new deal which will run until May 2004.

Scotland international Taylor has still to complete a medical with the club but no problems are envisaged.

Taylor burst on to the international scene in November 2000 with his debut against USA at Murrayfield.

But the forward suffered a broken hand during the defeat by Australia a week later.

Last year, Taylor received the ultimate accolade when Donal Lenihan and Graham Henry selected him for the Lions tour of Australia.

But the 22-year-old picked up a serious knee injury in the opening game of the tour and flew home.

Stirling-born Taylor returned to Ian McGeechan's side for the Calcutta Cup defeat at Twickenham after making a scoring return for Scotland A against their Welsh counterparts last year.

But, again, injury played its part for the player and an operation on his knee saw Taylor miss the autumn Test series against Tonga, Argentina and New Zealand.

However, the Gunners star has now returned to full fitness and played in the Six Nations opener against England at the weekend.
