Rassie move in doubt

London Irish's high-profile signing of Springbok flanker Rassie Erasmus may fall through - if he finds his form.

Erasmus will not link up with Irish if he returns to the Springbok side before the Test against Wales on June 8.

He told PA International: "I have an escape clause that says if I get back into the Bok team it becomes null and void.

"If that doesn't happen I will be going to join London Irish."

Flanker Erasmus, capped 36 times by the Springboks and who made his Test debut against the Lions in 1997, is due to join Irish on July 1 for pre-season training after agreeing a two-year contract.

Exiles rugby director Conor O'Shea said: "Rassie is a genuine world-class player, who is respected both on and off the pitch by his peers.

"He is in the prime of his career, and we know he will make a major contribution to the club in the short term and into the future."

Erasmus will link up with another fellow Springbok - Irish player/coach Brendan Venter - at the Madejski Stadium and could well have a Heineken Cup campaign to look forward to, given that the Exiles have reached this season's European Shield semi-finals and are well placed in the Zurich Premiership.
