Laporte plotting England's downfall
February 18, 2002

France boss Bernard Laporte has warned his side are determined to end England's winning streak when they square up at the Stade de France on March 2.

Clive Woodward's men, who have dominated the Lloyds TSB Six Nations Championship in the last three years, strengthened their hold on the tournament with a thrilling 45-11 victory over Ireland at Twickenham on Saturday.

"It has been said many times that England are the best team in Europe and our aim will be to show the contrary," Laporte said in Le Parisien on Monday.

"They have won the last three tournaments and they have also structured their team like a club.

"They have reached the highest level after five years spent building up their team."

France, meanwhile, finished fourth last year after losing three out of their five matches.

After a successful autumn campaign which saw them beat South Africa, Australia and Fiji, France started the tournament with a 33-12 win over Italy but on Saturday they only just beat Wales 37-33 in Cardiff.

Les Bleus will not start as favourites against England but Laporte added: "We should not be scared. We beat the South Africans and the Australians in November, and this gave us valuable information on our way of playing.

"Even if everything is not perfect this victory against Wales was our fifth in a row.

"In Cardiff our team had changed from our Italy match, whereas the English have been lining up the same squad for four years.

"There is no secret, we lack stability, but to beat the English we will have to be extremely ambitious.

"And in that field I am sure we will be good. Our Latin spirit will boost us. We won't fear them."
