New Bok contracts to be performance based
February 19, 2002

The Springbok squad will have to deliver better performances than those of last season if they want to earn the big money in the future.

This was the news after a meeting between SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd managing director Rian Oberholzer and the South African Rugby Players Association (Sarpa) in Cape Town on Monday, where it was decided the new Bok contracts would be performance based.

"We have now had two very good meetings and there is commonality in working towards a recognition agreement with Sarpa," Oberholzer was quoted in The Star.

"We both understand the business principle that we must invest wisely in our assets (players), but by the same token there must be a return on the investment.

"There is a general understanding of this and once the new coach is appointed we can have finality on certain issues."

Performance-based contracts were first discussed between the Sarfu business arm and former coach Harry Viljoen towards the end of last year.
