No surprises for Stormers
February 20, 2002

As expected Marius Goosen will start at fullback and Percy Montgomery at right wing for the Stormers in Friday night's Super 12 pipe opener against the Sharks in Durban.

Coach Gert Smal did not deliver any surprises when he announced his team on Wednesday.

Goosen, a draftee from the Pumas, impressed with his play during the warm-up games and with the gap left by the long-term injury to wing Breyton Paulse, Smal didn't hesitate to hand the former WP under-21 star his debut cap.

Wing is not an entirely strange position to Montgomery, as he played in that position in the same under-21 side as Goosen. Montgomery, however, went on to make a name for himself as fullback, although he also represented the Springboks at flyhalf and centre.

Goosen left for Boland and later moved to the Blue Bulls before accepting a contract from the Pumas this year. Smal coached him at Gardens-Tech and expects him to contribute meaningfully to the Stormers effort on Friday.

De Wet Barry and Werner Greeff are over the hamstring strains that threatened to keep them out of the game. Both trained without discomfort on Tuesday, as did captain and flank Corne Krige, whose thumb has healed satisfactorily enough for him to take on the physical Sharks.

Centre Marius Joubert, who had a taste of international rugby when he made his Springbok debut against New Zealand last year, will play his first Super 12 game, as will scrumhalf Johannes Conradie, prop Daan Human (pictured) and No 8 Adri Badenhorst.

This is a very inexperienced Stormers team, with stalwarts like Toks van der Linde, Robbie Kempson, Bob Skinstad, Neil de Kock, Robbie Fleck Paulse and missing through injury.

Substitutes Tjoepie van den Heever, Noel Oelshig and Jeffrey Sevens are all newcomers at Super 12 level.
