Vos calls time on his international career

Andre Vos, former captain of South Africa's national rugby team, decided Sunday the physical demands of international rugby were too much, and said he will no longer be available for selection to the Springboks.

Vos, 27, captained the Springboks 16 times in his 33 tests. He took over from Joost van der Westhuizen after the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Bob Skinstad then replaced him, during Harry Viljoen's coaching stint, as number eight and captain.

Vos then moved to the flank, where he performed with distinction in the face of the very real threat that Corne Krige posed as the best fetching flank in South Africa.

"It's a heartbreaking decision, but I have no other choice but to say goodbye to the green and gold," Vos said. "Physically I am no longer up to Springbok rugby."

Vos, who has missed the start of the Super 12 campaign through injury, has had his name linked with English Premiership side Leeds.

Once his injury is healed, he hopes to be able to play Super 12 rugby again once his team the Cats get back from their four-match tour of Australia and New Zealand. Their first match after their tour will be against the Chiefs on April 6.

Vos will then be available to play for the Lions in South Africa's tough domestic competition, the Currie Cup.

"My years in the Springbok team were the best of my life and I am proud of what I achieved and for the opportunity to be able to represent my country on the rugby field," Vos said.
