Panoho struggling

Prop Glenn Panoho is in doubt for Queensland's Super 12 clash with the Auckland Blues at Ballymore with an ankle injury.

Panoho sustained a bruised ankle during the Reds' 29-19 loss to defending champions the ACT Brumbies at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night, and is no certainty to be fit in time for this Saturday's round two match with a decision to be made on Friday.

While Panoho is in doubt, Queensland is more confident that flyhalf Elton Flatley will overcome his groin injury in time for the match, with coach Mark McBain to name his squad on Tuesday.

McBain has several selection headaches, including whether to promote Sam Cordingley as the starting halfback at the expense of Jacob Rauluni, while wingers Wendell Sailor and Ben Tune say they are ready for the Blues.

Auckland opened the season with a 60-7 pounding of the Wellington Hurricanes on Friday night, with six of their tries coming from their wingers, including four from All Black Doug Howlett.

Electrifying Fijian winger Rupeni Caucaunibuca will miss a month with a leg injury, but they centre Rico Gear and fullback Mils Muliaina still provide the Blues with plenty of pace and Sailor knows he is in for a tough match this week.

"Dougie Howlett is certainly going to be another challenge for me but Saturday's performance has helped my confidence," Sailor said.

The Reds arrived home disappointed to have lost to the champions but nonetheless pleased at having pushed the Brumbies, with skipper Dan Herbert lamenting that his team's efforts probably would have been enough against most other teams.

"There's no question we have things to work on, but we can take a lot of encouragement out of the Brumbies match," Herbert said.

McBain also has two areas of Queensland's game in mind for improvement this week at training, with reducing the number of penalties and better performances in the lineout uppermost in his mind.
