Vos gives his reasons
February 25, 2002

Former Springbok captain Andre Vos said on Monday that the toll of rugby on his body and continued absence from his family were the reasons for his retirement from international rugby.

"It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to the Springbok jersey but I am at peace with the decision that I have made," said Vos.

"After much thought and consultation with my wife Caroline and my family I made an appointment with Rian Oberholzer (SA Rugby managing director) to discuss my retirement from international rugby.

"There are two main factors that have led me to where I stand at present," he said. "My body has taken a hammering over the past few years and I'm not convinced that I will be able to perform at a level that will satisfy my personal expectations and standards over the next two years leading up to the World Cup.

"The second reason is the continued absence from home that is common with Test rugby. The international itinerary results in players being away from home for up to six months of the year. I have been fortunate enough to have represented South Africa for four years but now feel that family has become a priority in my life.

"I have been very proud to have represented my country on the field and have achieved far beyond my wildest dreams. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the supporters who over the years have backed the team and personally showed me much kindness and loyalty.

"I am fully committed to the Cats and the Lions and my current focus is to get match fit." - Sapa
