Dominguez blow for Italy
February 26, 2002

Italy flyhalf Diego Dominguez will miss Saturday's Six Nations match with Wales, the Italian Rugby Federation (FIR) announced on Monday.

Dominguez picked up an injury for his club side Stade Francais against Dax at the weekend and a scan on Monday in Paris "has made it impossible for him to play", according to the FIR statement.

However, the Argentine-born No 10 will link up with the squad at their Tirrenia training camp on Tuesday and hopes to be a spectator at the Millennium Stadium.

L'Aquila flyhalf German Cagnolo has been called into the squad of 46 players which on Tuesday will be reduced to 24 by coach Brad Johnstone, with the rest destined for the A international on Friday.

Another L'Aquila player in Maurizio Zaffiri and Padova's Marco Baroni have also been added to the squad following the withdrawals of fullback Paolo Vaccari and forward Salvatore Garozzo.

The injury to Dominguez deprives Italy of a man whose points' tally is bettered only by Neil Jenkins of Wales in the history of international rugby.

Ramiro Pez or Andrea Scanavacca are the two most likely replacements alongside scrumhalf Alessandro Troncon for Saturday's match.

Dominguez, who has scored all 24 of Italy's points in this year's Six Nations tournament, was reported to be the ringleader of an alleged mutiny to unseat New Zealander Johnstone, who on Saturday received a conditional vote of confidence from the FIR board.

FIR president Giancarlo Dondi, Johnstone's staunchest ally, will stay at the Tirrenia camp until Tuesday in a bid to ensure a harmonious atmosphere.

Dondi said: "I have found everywhere an attitude of great responsibility. Evidently everyone has listened to the appeal for everyone to pull together that the (FIR) board made on Saturday to the coaches, managers and players. - Sapa
