'Vos' decision first of many'
February 26, 2002

Former Cats coach Laurie Mains on Monday said Andre Vos's retirement from international rugby is only the first in a host of players said to call an early end to their careers.

Commenting on the former Bok captain's decision to close the door on the Green and Gold at the age of 27, Mains said the amount of rugby played by South Africans and New Zealanders will lead to more players following suit.

"We've got the same problem in New Zealand," the Highlanders coach told Beeld. "The Australians don't have the same problems because they don't have a provincial competition. They only play Super 12 and Test rugby.

"I have a lot of sympathy with players who complain about too much rugby, and something must be done about it. A possible solution is for coaches to increase the size of the squad to give the top players more chance to rest.

"I know it will be difficult because each coach would want to play his best players in every match. But the increasing of squad sizes will have to be considered otherwise a lot of players' careers will be cut short," he added.
