Carling slams 'amateurish' RFU
February 26, 2002

Former England skipper Will Carling has slammed the Rugby Football Union for turning the Martin Johnson affair into a farce.

Carling, notoriously stripped briefly of the England captaincy during the "old farts" controversy, spoke out in his Evening Standard column.

Current captain Johnson was handed a three-week suspension last Thursday and a subsequent appeal against the RFU's right to ban him has allowed him to captain England against France on Saturday.

Carling says, "How can a socalled professional game fail to get a disciplinary panel together in less than a week?

"It's another example of a professional game being run by parttimers. You cannot have Martin Johnson's career left in the hands of amateurs."
