Newport back on top
March 9, 2002
Newport roared back to the top of the Welsh/Scottish League table with a stunning nine-try 55-5 rout of Glasgow at Rodney Parade. The Black and Ambers avenged last season's title-crushing 27-6 defeat at the hands of the Scots to leapfrog Llanelli with a dominant display. The Gwent club racked up 29 unanswered points in a power-packed first-half performance which defied the strong wind. Young number eight Andrew Powell, back after eight weeks out with a broken hand, set the ball rolling when he thundered through a static Glasgow defence after just three minutes. Glasgow outside half Tommy Hayes missed two long-range penalties and a drop goal in an effort to claw back the arrears before the home side surged further into the lead when outstanding scrum-half Ofisa Tonu'u went over after a quickly-taken tapped penalty. Prop Rod Snow popped up on the left wing to add Newport's third and injury-time scores from Tonu'u and Peter Buxton effectively killed the game as a contest. The procession continued in the second period with Tonu'u needing five minutes to complete a stunning hat-trick and fly-half Shane Howarth booted a third successful conversion. Two minutes later and the home side went over for a magnificent seventh, Howell picking up at the base of a scrum, Tonu'u and Buxton both being involved again before flanker Jason Forster touched down under the posts. Former Springbok prop Adrian Garvey muscled his way over after coming on as a half-time replacement and Howarth's conversion rattled up the half-century. The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Tonu'u as he left the fray to a standing ovation. Newport allowed the visitors a consolation score but Matthew Watkins' injury-time try could not avert Glasgow's heaviest defeat of the season. |
