Oberholzer blasts 'childish' Mains
March 14, 2002

SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd managing director Rian Oberholzer on Wednesday lashed out at Highlanders coach Laurie Mains for his refusal to allow local media to interview him or any of his players.

Mains has had a dodgy relationship with the Cape-based media since his days as Cats and Lions coach, saying they had a personal vendetta against him.

But Oberholzer has blasted the controversial coach, calling his actions childish and not in the spirit of the competition. "That's the only conclusion you can make," he told Die Burger.

"By classifying yourself and your team as restricted area, you're guilty of childish behaviour. It is unacceptable that a coach can behave like this because the message of the Super 12 must be carried over in some way or the other. And that can only be done through the media.

"The problem must be addressed and a solution found soon," he concluded.

Oberholzer added that he would take the matter up with the New Zealand Rugby Football Union, but that he would wait until after their 2003 World Cup hosting issue with Australia had been sorted out.
