Bridgend run riot against Edinburgh
March 16, 2002

Bridgend played some glorious rugby against Edinburgh in their 53-30 Welsh-Scottish league victory at the Brewery Field.

They ran in four tries in the first half and added two more after the interval. Edinburgh registered three tries but were a well beaten side.

Both sides let the ball do the work in the opening phases and back-row players had to get across to tackle wingers in possession.

Duncan Hodge kicked the visitors into an early lead but the Bridgend reply was immediate and telling.

Late replacement Robert Mustoe set up a try for Dafydd James and then Maama Molitika released Gareth Thomas on another try scoring run. Craig Warlow converted both and the Ravens were well on their way.

Mustoe added a third try before the Tongan Aesea Havili brought the crowd to their feet with an exciting chip and chase that produced the fourth.

Edinburgh's all international back-row of Todd Blackadder, Martin Leslie and Simon Taylor could do nothing to stop the flow. The only Scottish reply before the interval came in the form of two penalties from Hodge.

Edinburgh came out for the second-half determined to make more of a showing and within one minute of the restart Hodge had sniped through for a try that he converted himself.

Warlow put over two more Bridgend penalties before their try scoring machine got into gear again.

James broke out of defence from inside his own half and when Havili was put in possession he had no one in front of him on a long run for the line.

The James-Thomas centre combination, not seen at the Brewer Field since they went off to play for separate clubs, was proving a powerful force and the opposition was hard pressed to keep them out.

Martin Leslie and Hines went over for Scottish tries in the last quarter but it was Bridgend replacement Keith Stewart who has the last word with the try that brought out 50 points for the home side.
