Smith still finds fault with Saints
March 16, 2002

Northampton coach Wayne Smith saw his side pick up a maximum five-point haul from their 34-14 victory over Leeds - but was still disappointed with the performance.

Smith, whose side reached the final of the Powergen Cup last week, could not hide his frustration at the performance of his underachieving side.

"We created a lot of chances but were not clinical enough," said the former New Zealand coach.

"We had opportunities to score at least four further tries and were unable to take them. There is a lot of work for us to do in that department."

Northampton won thanks to tries from Dan Richmond, Peter Jorgensen, Nick Beal and John Leslie, all of which were converted by Paul Grayson who also kicked two penalties.

But, in truth, the Saints should have won by a far wider margin.

Smith added: "We have worked hard all week and I thought our attitude was good - but there was a lack of concentration out there and that sometimes happens."

The defeat for Leeds saw them sucked right back into the relegation scrap, but their coach Phil Davies said: "I was quite pleased with our performance.

"We stuck at it and this has been a great learning experience for us.

"Northampton are on fire and they are an outstanding team at home. I think we have done well to come here and really give them a good game."
