Bulls make Brumbies sweat
March 16, 2002

The Bulls staged a brave effort on Saturday at Loftus in Pretoria, making the Brumbies sweat for a 45-35 victory in their Super 12 clash.

The Brumbies, however, had too much gas in the tank for the spirited Bulls and clinch a bonus point for scoring seven tries. They are on top of the log with 19 points after four rounds of games, sharing top spot with fellow Australian team the Waratahs. Their better points' difference gives the champions the top spot.

The Bulls scored their first point for getting six tries and if Franco Smith had his kicking boots on the outcome could have been so much different. However, he could only slot one out of six kicks to the poles.

Centre Stirling Mortlock was the Brumbies star. He scored three tries and his accurate goal-kicking played a huge role in the final scoreline.

Scorers:

Brumbies - Tries: Graeme Bond, Jeremy Paul, Stirling Mortlock (3), Mark Bartholomeusz, George Smith; Conversions: Mortlock (4), Stephen Larkham (1).

Bulls - Tries: Giscard Pieters (2), Johan Wasserman, Boeta Wessels, Hakkies Husselman, Adrian Jacobs; Conversions: Jaco van der Westhuyzen; Penalty: Franco Smith.
