Scotland's new professional side Borders have unveiled their latest recruit, the national 7s coach Rob Moffatt.

Moffat is currently assistant coach at Glasgow Rugby and will fill the same role when the new professional team is launched in the Borders next season.

Moffat, who is in Hong Kong with the Scotland Sevens squad, admitted it will be a wrench to leave Glasgow at the end of the season.

He said: "It was a difficult situation for me as I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Glasgow, however I am a Borderer and I am very excited by the challenge of helping to launch the new professional team."

Borders chief executive Alastair Cranston said: "Rob is one of the foremost thinkers in Scottish rugby and is a coach who believes passionately in delivering rugby with a style and panache - and that's good for both players and spectators."

Borders head coach Tony Gilbert added: "I am very much looking forward to working with Rob who was the outstanding candidate in a shortlist of exceptional quality."

Moffat, who lives in Galashiels, coached at Melrose before his first involvement in the professional game as coach with the Scottish Borders Reivers.

In 1998, when the four professional sides were amalgamated, Moffat became backs coach at Glasgow Caledonians and helped a number to win full international honours, including Jon Steel, Alan Bulloch, Andy Henderson and Graeme Beveridge.

Glasgow Rugby chief executive David Jordan wished Moffat well in his new role.

He said: "I would like to place on record our sincere thanks and appreciation for all the effort that Rob has expended on our behalf over the last four years and wish him good luck in his new post."

Scottish Rugby Union chief executive Bill Watson added: "At this stage we envisage that Rob will remain in post with Glasgow Rugby until the end of this season."
