Aussie star joins Swansea
March 20, 2002

Swansea have pulled off a major coup to sign Australia and Queensland Reds half-back Sam Cordingley.

They beat off the Reds say Queensland and Australian Rugby Unions with ''a substantial offer'' for Cordingley to play the next two seasons in Europe.

But Cordingley, who has been capped five times by Australia, said his decision was driven not by money but by a desire to play as much rugby as possible.

The presence of Wallaby captain George Gregan had a significant bearing on his decision, he said, adding: ''While George stays fit, the best I can aspire to is the relatively short Super 12 season and then to sit on the Wallabies' bench, but I want to play rugby not just train for rugby. The longer European season ensures I'll play plenty of quality football.''
