Record breaking weekend for Exiles
March 21, 2002

In the build up to last weekend's eve of Saint Patrick's Day Zurich Premiership match against Bristol Shoguns there was a feeling of optimism around London Irish that the attendance and Guinness consumption records set on the same weekend last year were under threat.

As events turned out both records were comfortably beaten and a new one established!

London Irish recorded its largest attendance ever for a home fixture in the club's 104 year history, 12,873 fans came to Madejski Stadium for Saturday's match against Bristol Shoguns. This crowd exceeded last year's record attendance by 836.

The record for consumption of the "black stuff" was also demolished as 29,830 pints were drunk between 12.00 noon and 11.00pm (23,400 last year)!

The club set a new record as sales of its home replica shirt passed 20,000 for the first time in a season.

Commenting on the outcome of the weekend Richard Sanderson, Chief Executive of London Irish said, "These figures are very encouraging. They provide positive evidence that there is a growing market for professional rugby union in the Thames Valley and for the popularity of London Irish. They also prove that people love a great party!"
