Harris set to start at flyhalf for Wales
March 22, 2002

Injury concerns over Wales flyhalf Stephen Jones could lead to a late change in their starting line-up with Iestyn Harris returning to face England at Twickenham tomorrow.

Jones has been struggling with a muscle spasm in his back all week and former rugby league star Harris now looks poised to take over the number 10 jersey.

A final decision will be made at Wales' London team hotel on Saturday morning, but Harris' first Six Nations start at fly-half looks a certainty.

"At this stage, it looks unlikely that Stephen will play," Hansen said.

"We will look at it in the morning, and sort it out from there. We would bring Iestyn in and I have got every confidence in him."

Hansen confirmed he was pretty much resigned to losing Jones, whose goal-kicking and general tactical play have proved key in Llanelli reaching this season's Heineken Cup semi-finals.

Despite the problem with Jones, Hansen said he had been delighted with Wales' preparations for their toughest game of the Six Nations campaign.

"Our job is to go out there and earn England's respect. At the moment, I don't think we have it. The top four or five sides are a little way ahead of everyone else at the moment," he added.

"But this team hasn't played against England before, and we have got 80 minutes against them to earn a little respect.

"England have talked a lot about a big performance after losing against France. They are a proud nation, and when you get beaten, you always want to perform well the next time."

If Harris is promoted off the bench, then it will be his first Six Nations start at fly-half, and only the second in that position following his Test debut against Argentina last November.

Following a faltering first appearance, Harris was switched to centre where he made three further appearances, but was then dropped after Wales' 54-10 Six Nations humbling by Ireland in Dublin.

Since switching codes to join Cardiff from Leeds Rhinos, Harris has won five caps, but tomorrow's game would represent comfortably the biggest test of his fledgling union career.

Harris would also be expected to take over the goal-kicking from prolific Llanelli point-scorer Jones as Wales seek their first Twickenham success since 1988.

If Harris moves off the bench, then Cardiff's uncapped Nicky Robinson is likely to be drafted in among the replacements.
