The Super League's official travel agency, TravelCorp, has come up with a novel and touching gesture to welcome the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) to the League.

TravelCorp has offered NYAC a free air ticket on United Airlines to any destination in the lower 48 states as a way of compensating the club in some small way for its losses in last year's attacks on the World Trade Center.

The Denver-based agency, jointly owned and operated by Jim 'Bob' Glabman and former Eagle Michael Dejong, suggested that NYAC could raffle the ticket as part of any fund-raising activities. "We thought it would be a great way to welcome them to Super League," said Glabman. "Even though it was their members who were lost on 9/11, the rugby community as a whole was affected."

Glabman added that TravelCorp also wanted to do what it could to help the families of the NYAC victims. "Knowing what they've gone through, we thought we could help the families. We wanted to give something back. I can't imagine what it would be like to lose one member of a club, let alone three."

The club will auction the ticket on a date to be set. "We're gratified at the outpouring of support from all over the world," said NYAC chairman Jim Smyth. "We lost three valuable members of our club.

"Scrumhalf Sean Lugano was an All-American at Loyola. Second rower Mark Ludvigsen was also a fine administrator and a great recruiter, and Brent Woodall, also a second rower, was one of the best athletes who ever came our way. He was a collegiate baseball player and played PAC 10 football at Berkeley.

"We had memorial services for all three and we raised around $25,000 for those services. We've also tried to help the families as best we can."
