March 28, 2002

The Northern California First Division regular season has come to a close with four of the six teams now gearing up for the playoffs which kick off on April 6.

In the match of the round, the Hayward Griffins hosted the San Jose Seahawks and the home team ran out narrow 32-27 winners.

Hayward got on the board first with a converted try, but San Jose hit right back with a penalty goal, all within the first ten minutes of the game. The Griffins were next to score with two unconverted tries and ended the half 17-3 in front.

The Seahawks then took control at the start of the second half racking up three more penalty goals and a converted try to skip ahead 19-17. At the midway point of the half, Hayward kicked things up a notch to regain the lead, before San Jose levelled the scores at 22-22.

Then inside the last ten minutes, the Griffins added another penalty and crossed for a try to again move in front. San Jose wasn't done yet though and with less than five minutes to go they struck back with an unconverted try to cut Hayward's lead to just five points. However, Hayward defended their line strongly and sealed the deal.

Elsewhere, San Mateo beat Sacramento 72-7, while the Olympic Club downed San Francisco Golden Gate 21-19. Olympic and SFGG also fielded teams in Super League matches.

The Division One table sees Hayward (4-1), San Mateo (4-1) and San Jose (4-1), ahead of Olympic Club (2-3), SFGG (1-4) and Sacramento (0-5).
