Johnstone to consider his future
March 28, 2002

Italy's final Lloyds TSB Six Nations game against England in Rome could well be coach Brad Johnstone's last after the New Zealander revealed he is considering his position.

Johnstone, who today recalled Benetton centre Walter Pozzebon to his 23-man squad now that he has recovered from the back injury which has sidelined him since November, has a contract with the Italian Rugby Federation (IRF) until after the 2003 World Cup.

But he has not had the full support of the IRF this season.

Speculation is rife in Italian rugby circles that the IRF will discuss Johnstone's future after the England game on April 7.

He told PA International: "I have a contract with the national team until the end of the World Cup but I will evaluate the situation after the Six Nations."

Johnstone has been able to add Pozzebon to his squad. But he will be unable to call upon the injured Carlo Checchinato (muscle sprain), Juan Manuel Queirolo (cheekbone operation), Salvatore Garozzo (back), Andrea Lo Cicero, Andrea Muraro (knee) and Salavatore Perugini, who was banned for 20 weeks yesterday after his butt on Ireland scrum-half Peter Stringer last weekend.

Squad: M Bergamasco, D Dallan, A Moscardi, M Mazzantini, N Mazzucato, W Pozzebon (Benetton Treviso); S Dellape, A Persico, M Phillips (Arix Viadana); G De Carli, A De Rossi, A Moretti, C Zanoletti (Calvisano); M Bortolami (APS Petrarca Padova); C Nieto (SKG Gran Rugby); D Dominguez (Stade Francais); M Giacheri (Sale Sharks), G Peens (Two Net Piacenza); R Pez (Rotherham); F Pucciariello (Gloucester), G Raineri (Lottomatica Roma); C Stoica (Castres); A Troncon (Montferrand).
