US Super League -- Easter bye ahead of round three

Three weeks into the Super League season and everyone is enjoying a bye weekend for Easter.

After just two rounds, several teams already have signaled their intentions. Old Blue New York, Belmont Shore, PAC and the Denver Barbarians have all started their 2002 campaigns like Formula I race cars screeching off the start grid at a grand prix meet.

Old Blue New York is the only team in the League to score maximum points from their first two games. Unlike last year when they were slow out of the gates, this year is a totally different story with new skipper Mark Griffin and his mates firing on all cylinders from the opening kickoff. They'll need to be on their game in week three though, when they host last year's finalists OMBAC.

OMBAC has played just one game so far getting away with a narrow victory at home against the Dallas Harlequins. They were without two of their stars, Conrad Hodgson and Ryan ReBell, both on 7s duty, and should test Old Blue in the big apple.

The Harlequins made amends in week two against Old Puget Sound Beach in Dallas and look to be too strong for the Olympic Club Blues who visit cowtown next week.

Belmont Shore turned heads by demolishing the Olympic Club in the opening round, but if you'd been following the Southern California championship it was no surprise. Shore has a new skipper in Bevan Leckner, plus a new player/coach in Matt Webber, along with a host of new faces and these guys are serious about winning.

In week three they host San Francisco Golden Gate who upended 2000 champions Life University in their opening match. SFGG has a very talented roster, including past and present Eagles, and this game could be the match of the round.

The Potomac Athletic Club had a good fall season in the MARFU comp, but so did Philadelphia-Whitemarsh and the result of their opening day matchup was one of the true surprises. PAC was way too good for Philly and next week they travel to Chicago to tackle the Lions, who also racked up a W in their first outing against the New York Athletic Club (NYAC). This too will be a great matchup.

The Denver Barbarians caught people's attention by dispatching the Olympic Club Blues in impressive style in week two. The Barbos have already equaled their total number of wins in 2001, so look for them to maintain the pressure on NYAC next week.

The Kansas City Blues are definitely a team worth watching. They took care of Washington in their first game and next week they're up against Old Puget Sound Beach. OPSB has some injuries, but captain Finau Puloka and coach Scott Shepherd will turn up the heat at home in Seattle.

Neither Boston nor defending champs the Gentlemen of Aspen have made a tackle this year as aircraft mechanical troubles put the kibosh on their scheduled second week encounter. However, Aspen is in Atlanta next week to take on Life and is sure to cause problems for the Running Eagles.

Boston plays Philadelphia-Whitemarsh in a game that's hard to predict. Boston is still an unknown quantity, but they've been training hard under new coach Rupert Gordon. A winless Washington has a bye.
