Hawick remain on course for double
March 30, 2002
League champions Hawick stayed on course for a Scottish double with a bruising 27-13 BT Cellnet Cup semi-final. Currie shocked Hawick with an early try before the home team's forward dominance set up the platform for a Murrayfield cup final next month. Hawick totally dominated the second half and only over eagerness and careless passing denied them a bigger winning margin. After an indifferent start, Currie shocked the favourites when Aaron Cowie split the defence and Mike Duncan touched down for the opening score. Hawick struck back with a superb try from Nikki Walker who chipped a head and won the race for the touchdown. Neil Stenhouse converted. Hawick were now rampant and on the return of Howe, they stretched their lead with a try from Colin Turnball. Hawick had the advantage of a strong wind in the second half and Stenhouse made it count with a penalty only for Duncan to counter with a penalty. Stenhouse restored Hawick's advantage with a second penalty and added third when Paul Mooney was yellow carded. Stenhouse's fourth and fifth penalties rapped up a workman-like display by Hawick before Currie scored a consolation try through Eric Milligan in the final minute. |
