March 30, 2002

Caerphilly's hopes of a Principality Cup giant-killing act were buried as Pontypridd's powered to a convincing 46-31 win to move into the semi-finals.

Former Caerphilly player Brett Davey inspired Pontypridd in the first half, kicking five penalties and two conversions as part of a crucial 19-point tally.

Pontypridd went on the attack from the kick-off and took the lead in the fourth minute with a 22-metre penalty from Davey.

The home side then took complete control and in the space of 12 minutes Davey added four more penalties as the visitors continually killed the ball at set pieces, resulting in number six Ben Watkins being sin binned.

In the 24th minute outside half Luke Richards cut the deficit with a penalty after Pontypridd were caught off side.

Caerphilly were now more in the action and set up a series of attacks in the hosts' half, but a solid defence kept them at bay.

In the closing stages Pontypridd struck again when a fine handling move saw centre Sonny Parker power over for a try that Davey converted.

In a lengthy period of injury time, Caerphilly's Andrew Williams crossed for a try which Richards converted with Gareth Jones responding with a touchdown for Pontypridd that Davey converted.

After the half-time break the home side continued to attack but simple handling errors prevented further scores.

As the game reached its last quarter the visitors reduced the gap with a try from wing Tuana'holo Taufahema converted by Luke Richards.

Within minutes Pontypridd added tries through Parker and replacement Nigel Simpson.

Right on time Paul John added a touch down converted by Ceri Sweeney with Andrew Williams and Roddy Boobyer added tries for Caerphilly both converted by Richards.
