Melville finds fault with victory
March 30, 2002

Gloucester coach Nigel Melville admitted his side had not played well in their 36-13 victory over Saracens but was more than happy to claim the points and singled out Ludovic Mercier for special praise.

Melville saw the French kicking ace notch up 19 points from five penalties and two conversions to spare his side's blushes as they had Terry Fanolua and Mark Cornwell sin-binned in the first half.

Melville, who claimed he had never seen anyone kick the ball so far, said afterwards: "It was a stop-start game with some pernickety referee, so there was very little flow.

"This was a very good example of a team playing badly but winning.

"Remember we played a quarter of the game one player short after the yellow cards."

Saracens player-coach Tim Horan left disappointed, claiming they expected to win.

In spite of the defeat Horan said he was well pleased with his team's efforts in a game where the score flattered Gloucester.
