Wendell still waiting
April 7, 2002

Despite the fact 11 tries were scored as the Queensland Reds beat the Stormers 49-46 at Ballymore, winger Wendell Sailor's drought has continued.

Sailor has now played six Super 12 matches, as well as a couple of trial games, but has yet to touch down since making a much-heralded switch from the Brisbane Broncos in the off-season.

In Saturday night's match against the Stormers he came as close to scoring as he has since the move, but with the crowd making as much noisy encouragement as they could he was pulled down just short of the line.

"I was so close I could taste it, I could smell it," Sailor said. "Sometimes I think I might be cursed but I am almost sick of talking about it because I think I might be jinxing myself when it comes to scoring this first try.

"Overall it was a bit of a mixed bag but I suppose I am reasonably happy with my performance because I got a lot more involved and the most important thing is that the team had a win and we are still in the race for the semi-finals.

"The crowd support has just been sensational here at Ballymore and hopefully they will keep coming back. If we can keep playing like we did tonight and keep scoring plenty of tries then I'm sure they will.

"Hopefully they will get to see me score a try sooner than later."

While Sailor didn't score, his coach Mark McBain was nonetheless delighted by his performance, saying that he had contributed well to the tight victory.

"I thought he played well. I don't think he can complain about not getting the ball, neither can Tuney (Ben Tune), neither can (Chris) Latham," McBain said. "It was a big plan of ours just to give them the ball and it opened up the game."
