WP deny stars set for exit
April 16, 2002

Western Province have moves to allay fears that four of their stars were on the verge of moving to England on lucrative contracts.

Rob van der Valk, former commercial manager of the Bok team and currently representative of the SA Rugby Players Association (Sarpa), alleged that Pieter Rossouw, Percy Montgomery, Robbie Kempson and Corne Krige as well as Thinus Delport of the Sharks would be moving to the UK at the end of the current Super 12 season.

Rob Wagner, chief executive of WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd, said yesterday that he had heard nothing of the rumours

"I am those players' employer. I pay their salaries. If they want to get out of their contracts, they have to negotiate with me. Not one of them has approached me," he commented.

According to Wagner, Montgomery, Kempson and Krige are all contracted until the end of the 2003 season, while Rossouw's contract with Western Province expires at the end of this season.

"I think Van der Valk is just a chancer, as his comments are sometimes laughable. Someone like Corne would never drop his union and coach halfway through the season. He is committed and in any case, he has a lot of integrity."

Wagners stressed that a player would only be released from his contract if Gert Smal, Stormers and WP coach, gave the okay.
