Mandela clash at Twickenham?
April 19, 2002

Twickenham could be set to stage a mouth-watering clash between Australia and South Africa later this year.

The two southern hemisphere giants have been in talks over an autumn clash which they believe could generate up to £2million in gate receipts.

World champions Australia, who learned yesterday they will be the sole hosts of next year's World Cup, are due to play England on November 16, with the Springboks taking on Clive Woodward's men a week later.

If the game is arranged, it would probably come after that, although South African Rugby chief Rhian Oberholzer admitted finding a suitable date was a stumbling block.

"We have discussed the possibility of playing the match at Twickenham," he told the Daily Mail.

"The problem is finding a suitable date. It would be an attractive match for South African and Australian ex-pats in Britain."
