Quinnell signs for Saracens

Wales forward Craig Quinnell has quit Cardiff to join Saracens in a four-year deal reputedly worth around £400,000.

It will be Quinnell's second stint in the Zurich Premiership, having played for Richmond before their much-publicised demise.

The 26-year-old, younger brother of Wales captain Scott, was believed to have been targeted by several other English clubs, together with French pair Toulouse and Bordeaux.

His arrival at Vicarage Road next season will coincide with Scotland international lock Scott Murray's likely departure to the new Borders professional outfit.

Quinnell leaves Cardiff after failing to agree a new contract.

"I am sorry to be leaving Cardiff. I have done my level best to negotiate something with them," he said.

Quinnell made his Test debut against Fiji in 1995, and despite suffering serious back and knee injuries since then, he has gone on to win 32 caps.

Saracens, chronic under-achievers again this term, are unlikely to halt their spending after securing Quinnell's signature.

Also, Saracens are reportedly about to make another of their major overseas signings in the formidable shape of Christian Califano.

The French prop was due to put pen to paper last night in Auckland, where he completes his Super 12 contract next month.

Still his country's most capped front row forward with 66 Tests, the 29-year-old from Toulouse has reportedly agreed a three-year deal with Sarries, who are set to be coached by former New Zealand captain Wayne Shelford next season.

Fiji fly half Nicky Little is also joining from Pontypridd.
