Neath close in on Welsh/Scottish League title
May 7, 2002
Neath will clinch the final Welsh-Scottish League title this evening if they beat Swansea in their final game of the season and Llanelli lose at bottom club Caerphilly. If both title challengers win then Neath would still be in pole position with a hefty 16-try advantage - the determining factor in the event of a points tie - over Llanelli entering their final fixture. If both sides lose then the title race will still be open with Neath, Llanelli, Newport and Cardiff all retaining a chance of clinching the title. Neath will put celebrations on hold if they win and Llanelli beat Caerphilly, fearing there could be a bitter twist in the tale when Llanelli take on an under strength Cardiff in their final game. Coach Lyn Jones, told the Western Mail, "Everyone is aware of what is on the line. I never have and never will expect any favours from Swansea. "It is vital we get maximum support from our loyal fans, to make St Helen's feel as much like the Gnoll as possible." What Neath may fear is that Cardiff would prefer fellow Gang of Six member Llanelli to win the league than Neath, the club Rugby Partnership Wales members Bridgend, Cardiff, Llanelli, Newport, Pontypridd and Swansea plotted to have thrown into the wilderness by the Welsh Rugby Union. "People wanted to put this club out of existence only a few months ago. This situation (Neath winning the title) will reflect very badly on those people, people who unfortunately cannot see further than the end of their own noses," said Jones.
