Tykes focused on do or die clash
May 7, 2002

Leeds Tykes coach Phil Davies has demanded his side get something out of their Zurich Premiership clash with Sale tomorrow night if they hold out hopes of survival in the top flight.

Leeds currently find themselves at the bottom of the Premiership and a disappointing defeat at the hands of Harlequins last Friday was damaging to their cause. But victory tomorrow would boost their hopes of survival with only one more game left.

Bath, Saracens and Harlequins are all possible contenders for the drop to National League Division One but the Tykes remain the favourites to go down.

"We have made a couple of changes to the side for the trip to Sale to freshen things up after the Harlequins game last Friday," commented Davies. "We were obviously disappointed with the result but we have to get ourselves back up for the trip to Sale.

"Jim Mallinder has done a tremendous job with Sale, they are one of the best teams we have played against this season and play a very attractive style of rugby. They have a talented young squad and we know we are in for a tough game.

"I cannot fault the efforts of the players this season at every stage and now we face two games which will obviously make or break our season. Every time I have asked the players for a real effort they have delivered and there is no one more determined to survive in the Premiership than this group of players.

"Tomorrow night is our game-in-hand on the other three teams around us at the foot of the table, so it is important that we get something out of the game.

"One of our main difficulties this season has been that we have not picked up as many bonus points as I would have liked, so at the very least that should be something we aim for. However, if we can put the right calibre of performance in, we can certainly compete with any team in the Premiership.

"I have spoken to the players about enjoying their game and it is difficult when people are talking about how much pressure is on the result. However, there is no more pressure on this eighty minutes of rugby than there was on the first eighty minutes of the season against Bath. We need to focus on the game first and foremost, not the table - and we can look at that afterwards."

Davies has made eight changes to the starting line-up. England A's Dan Scarbrough moves to full back with Argentine World Cup winger Octavio Bartolucci coming
into the side.

Chris Hall starts on the opposite wing with Steve Bachop in the starting line with Braam van Straaten reverting to centre.

The pack sees Justin Wring, James Ponton and Carl Hogg coming into the starting XV after being on the bench last Friday at Harlequins.
