Title loss a disappointment for Jones
May 7, 2002

Neath coach Lyn Jones put on a brave face after seeing his team blow their Welsh-Scottish League title hopes.

The visitors' 20-16 defeat at Swansea removed them from the championship equation.

Llanelli will secure the title if they win at Cardiff on Friday night - but Cardiff and Newport are also still firmly in contention.

A Cardiff victory over the Scarlets would take them top, leaving them facing an anxious 24-hour wait before Newport meet Bridgend.

Provided Newport also defeat Pontypridd on Wednesday night and Cardiff finish on top against Llanelli, then Newport's superior try count will undoubtedly see them finish as top dogs.

"We are very disappointed, but good luck to Llanelli, Cardiff and Newport," Jones said.

"We were hoping to see the title settled tonight. If we wanted to win the championship, then we knew we had to win here.

"We can play better than that - we saved our worst performance for last - but all credit to Swansea in what was a very physical match."

Neath at least have the consolation of qualifying for next season's Heineken Cup, and Jones added: "It will be a big challenge.

"We want to compete in the Heineken Cup, and we want to get to the knockout stages."
