Scarlets close in on title
May 9, 2002

Llanelli could go a long way to erasing memories of their Heineken Cup semi-final defeat on Friday by wrapping up the Welsh/Scottish League title at Cardiff.

Victory at the Arms Park would seal the title but any slip-ups and the door will be open for Newport to come through on the rails and pip Cardiff for title glory.

Newport face Bridgend on Saturday, knowing that a win would inevitably give them the crown, given their superior try-count over Cardiff.

Cardiff though, must beat the Scarlets, otherwise Llanelli will complete the first half of a potential domestic double.

A Cardiff win would put them top, meaning an anxious 24-hour wait before discovering the outcome of Saturday's Newport and Bridgend clash at Rodney Parade.

Neath blew their title chances by losing to Swansea on Tuesday night, and Scarlets team manager Anthony Buchanan said: "Tomorrow night provides a huge opportunity that we owe to Swansea.

"Last weekend we thought we were out of it, but our destiny is now in our own hands, and we realise the job we have to do."

Llanelli will also contest Saturday week's Principality Cup final against Pontypridd at the Millennium Stadium.

"It's a big week coming up, playing for the championship and the cup," Buchanan added.

"The boys are focused, and everyone in the club is confident, but if we want to lift the title, then we have got be at our best."
