Cambridge Uni claim Rosslyn Parks 7s title
May 9, 2002

It was nearly 11 o'clock on Wednesday evening by the time a packed Rosslyn Park watched as an impressive Cambridge University side defeat premiership side London Irish to win the prestigious 2002 Floodlit Sevens, in a pulsating Final that went right to the wire.

The Cambridge side, which included Russell Earnshaw of Rotherham and Hong Kong Sevens winner Simon Amor, hung on against a strong London Irish side. With both sides scoring some memorable tries and with the lead changing several times, Cambridge eventually won 28-26, despite a late Irish rally. It was the perfect finale to a tournament that had boasted such high calibre sides as The Army, Wasps and last year's winners Saracens. Every one of the evening's fifteen matches produced high quality sevens in the dry, firm conditions.

British Lion, England and Saracens back-row Richard Hill presented the Floodlit Trophy to the winning captain Simon Amor. Simon, an England Sevens international, impressed throughout the tournament; showing a blend of pace, vision and excellent kicking. Cambridge despatched Richmond and host club Rosslyn Park at the group stage before outclassing Wasps - one of the premiership favourites, 28-5 in their Semi-Final.

"This year's tournament was once again, bigger and better in every sense of the word. The huge crowd of rugby fans that supported our tournament were rewarded with some quite fantastic rugby from all twelve teams", said John Gunner (Chairman, Floodlit 7's)

The large crowd of partying spectators, who included internationals Dallaglio, Greening and Vickery, as well as Martin Offiah and Shaun Edwards, helped raise funds for Rosslyn Park through a raffle that boasted prizes including signed rugby memorabilia.
