May 11, 2002

Pontypridd ended the final season of the Welsh-Scottish League in grand style, with a 59-27 win over Edinburgh.

Pontypridd ran in nine superb tries in a brilliant team effort in which the pack were rampant at all phases.

Wing Gareth Wyatt, centre Johnathan Bryant and outside half Keri Sweeney were outstanding.

Pontypridd made a sensational start with Wyatt, after only 23 seconds, kicking ahead from a Sweeney pass to re-gather and touchdown at the corner for a gem of a try that full-back Brett Davey converted.

After this initial shock, Edinburgh has the better of the exchanges and in the 20th minute from a maul near the line hooker Steve Scott crashed over at the corner.

Pontypridd then returned on the attack and after play in the visitors 22 skilful handling by the forwards saw Gethan Jenkins put Sweeney over for a try that Davey converted.

Minutes later Ponty struck again with a fine touchdown from wing Shaun James. Right on the interval Edinburgh cut the deficit to 19-8 with a 22m kick from outside-half Duncan Hodge.

Ponty began the second half with a bang. A break from the halfway line from Johnathan Bryant left the defence helpless with his vast power and when challenged near the line put Sonny Parker over near the post for a try which Davey converted.

Minutes later, Sweeney jinked and swerved from halfway to sprint over for a superb try and with traffic all one way further Ponty touchdowns came from Davey, Wyatt and Gareth Baber.

Ponty then made sweeping changes that allowed Edinburgh to hit back with a touchdown from Kevin Hutterson converted by Hodge.

In the closing stages Ponty added a try from Sonny Parker with Edinburgh responding with tries from Craig Smith and Hutterson.
