Waugh out for three months
May 19, 2002

NSW flanker Phil Waugh will be sidelined for at least three months with an ankle injury.

Waugh will undergo surgery this week to correct irritation of tendons in his ankle, after receiving and injury last month against the Hurricanes.

He returned for the Waratahs' 51-10 Super 12 semi-final loss to the Brumbies last night, but said there was no danger of worsening the injury.

He will now miss Australia's Test series against France next month as well as the Bledisloe Cup and Tri Nations campaign against New Zealand and South Africa.

Waugh was always going to consider surgery when the Waratahs' Super 12 commitments were finished.

He is the second leading Waratah player to have surgery after Wallaby
centre Nathan Grey had a knee reconstruction operation late last month.

Grey suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage and is out for the rest of the year.
