Powergen winners to get Heineken Cup place
May 21, 2002

The Rugby Football Union have confirmed that the winners of the Powergen Cup will gain automatic entry into the European Cup for the next three seasons.

The decision was made today to coincide with the extension of the energy supplier's sponsorship of the English national cup competitions.

London Irish hammered Northampton in this year's final but were forced to finish in the Premiership's top four to gain entry into Europe's most prestigious club competition next season.

Now, the winners will receive one of the six places on offer to English clubs.

It was also confirmed that the Powergen Shield, launched this season for National League clubs beaten at the last-16 stage of the major cup competition, will continue.
