Lomu set to miss Commonwealth Games
May 22, 2002

Superstar Jonah Lomu is set to be unable to aid New Zealand's defence of their Commonwealth Games 7s title due to a clash with the Tri Nations.

New Zealand, who face Australia and South Africa, name their squad on Monday and Lomu is almost certain to be included.

New Zealand have refused to change the dates of the Tri-Nations and Lomu, in Manchester today when Virgin were announced as the Games' travel partner, admits it is a dilemma.

He said: "It's all up in the air and down to the selectors whether I make the All Blacks. At the moment it is very unlikely I will be at the games.

"I'd like to be at both if I could. I just wish both events didn't coincide.

"The Games and the Tri-Nations are very important to me. The Games has a special place in my career and winning gold meant a lot.

"However I have to go along with whatever decision the selectors make.

"First and foremost, I am contracted to the New Zealand RFU and whatever they say goes.

"It's always been an understanding that if I get selected for the All Blacks then I won't be available for the Games."
