Regan to be released by Bath
May 23, 2002

Former England hooker Mark Regan is set to leave Zurich Premiership side Bath after being told he has no future with the club.

Regan, who still has two years remaining on his existing club contract, joined Bath five seasons ago and was a member of their 1998 Heineken Cup final-winning team.

But Bath's Australian coach Michael Foley does not see the 30-year-old as part of any long-term plans.

Foley recently recruited ex-Cardiff and Wales hooker Jonathan Humphreys - three years Regan's senior - while the West Country outfit also have Andy Long and Lee Mears on their books.

A Bath statement read: "After a poor season, Bath Rugby clearly needed to make changes to the playing squad to re-establish not only its short-term goals, but also the future prosperity of the club.

"Mark Regan has been offered the opportunity to further his career elsewhere.

"Mark has made 130 appearances a hooker during a career spanning five seasons with Bath Rugby.

"As an international, Mark has represented England on 23 occasions and won a cap with the British Lions against South Africa in 1997.

"In the current environment, however, Mark, through his agent Alistair Saverimutto, is actively seeking a new challenge."
