Tune injury opens door for Wendell
May 27, 2002

Wendell Sailor is in line for a starting berth in the Wallaby team after a knee injury to Ben Tune that could rule him out of the two Test series against France next month.
Tune hurt his knee during a club game in Brisbane on the weekend and is awaiting the result on tests that are expected to confirm ligament damage.

Tune's injury means Sailor's appearance for Australia A against Canada this weekend will become a full-on trial for a Test spot.

Wallaby coach Eddie Jones said it was a chance for Sailor but would not be drawn on who would be a likely replacement.

"First of all I'm hoping for the best with Tunie's results," Jones said.

"This Australia A game is certainly an opportunity for Wendell but we also have Scott Staniforth and Grame Bond who had strong Super 12s playing on the right wing."

However, Jones did indicate he had a high opinion of Sailor.

"Our stats show he broke more tackles than any other Australian player in Super 12," he said.

Meanwhile, New South Wales winger Marc Stcherbina has been called into the Australia A rugby team to replace the injured Mark Bartholomeusz.

Bartholomeusz injured an ankle playing for ACT Brumbies in Saturday's Super 12 final.

The Canadians lost their opening Australian tour game against New South Wales Country 24-6 in Bathurst on Saturday.
