Swansea's future uncertain

The future of Welsh club Swansea is uncertain after an attempt to amalgamate with Neath was turned down.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Mike James and Rob Davies, Swansea's main financial backers who have ploughed almost £3 million into the club over the past five years, called a series of meetings with their local rivals to discuss a possible amalgamation.

Central to the approach was the construction of a new 20,000-seat stadium at Morfa, which is expected to be completed by next autumn. The stadium, which the Whites will share with Swansea City Football Club, is situated halfway between Swansea and Neath. But Neath, who are owned by the Welsh Rugby Union and finished three places above Swansea in the Welsh-Scottish League, rejected the offer.

James and Davies say that the outcome of the Welsh Rugby Union EGM on Sunday -at which the 239 Welsh clubs rejected Sir Tasker Watkins's report recommending a major overhaul of the union - failed to address the structural and financial crisis facing the professional game.

James and Davies also held meetings with the union last week, in which they explained the problems facing one of Wales's oldest and greatest clubs. They also told the union that the time had come for them to deliver change or face the consequences.
