Monty hints at Bok return

Newport-bound Percy Montgomery has declared he would like to pay for the Springboks again but he is not about to renege on his contract with the Welsh club.

Springbok coach Rudolf Straeuli hinted on Monday he would listen if Montgomery wanted to return to the international fold but said that it was up to the player whether he wanted to come back.

"If Percy wants to play for South Africa, if he decides to come back, the door is open. It's an easy choice in life. I spoke to him a few weeks ago, but not since," he said.

Montgomery told the Cape Times "To play any part would be an honour, but I have a contract with Newport," he said.

"I saw the guys at Newlands (on Monday) and I had a lump in my throat as I watched Saturday's first Test. I had been part of it and to watch wasn't nice. I want to be part of it," he added. "I'll have to phone Rudolf and hear what the story is. All the other accusations are nonsense."

However, he would not back out of his contract like his fellow Springbok Joost van der Westhuizen. "From November 1, I'm going. I can't do another Joost. It wouldn't be right for me to close the door on other players."
