All Blacks dump Randell, Umaga
June 16, 2002

The All Blacks have reacted to their ordinary 15-6 win over Ireland at Carisbrook by dropping Taine Randell and Tana Umaga.

Randell can consider himself unlucky to be left out in favour of Otago lock Simon Maling, having not played a single minute of the match, while Umaga has been replaced by Canterbury centre Mark Robinson.

New Zealand coach John Mitchell was unavailable for comment after the 22-man squad was named, opting instead to issue a statement through the New Zealand Rugby Football Union.

"If we are going to get the delivery of performance that we are after, we need to be consistent with our selection," Mitchell said. "We were not entirely satisfied with the performance at Carisbrook but we are giving the players another chance."

Umaga, Randell and prop Kees Meeuws, who missed the match against the Irish with a sprained ankle, were all released to play for the New Zealand Barbarians against New Zealand Maori in Albany on Friday night.

"It's an opportunity for those players to get another game under their belts which is important at this stage of the season," Mitchell said.

"In the case of Tana, he hasn't had a lot of match time in the last month and we felt it would be more beneficial for him to get a full game for the Baabaas."

National selectors Kieran Crowley and Mark Shaw will prepare the Barbarians, who assemble in Auckland on Wednesday, for the game.

The return of Maling, who made his test debut in the 64-10 win over Italy on June 8, means the All Blacks will carry three specialist locks into the second test against Ireland.

All Blacks: Leon MacDonald, Doug Howlett, Jonah Lomu, Caleb Ralph, Mark Robinson, Daryl Gibson, Aaron Mauger, Andrew Mehrtens, Byron Kelleher, Justin Marshall, Scott Robertson, Marty Holah, Richard McCaw, Reuben Thorne (capt), Simon Maling, Norm Maxwell, Chris Jack, Greg Somerville, Mark Hammett, Tom Willis, Dave Hewett, Joe McDonnell.
