Canterbury retain Ranfurly Shield
July 17, 2002

Canterbury have retained the Ranfurly Shield in the first defence of their title this season with a comfortable 57-7 victory over Marlborough in Blenheim.

It was soon evident that their would be no repeat of Marlborough's historic Ranfurly Shield victory over Canterbury 29 years ago as the holders ran in a total of nine tries.

The understrength Canterbury side, who were without their All Blacks, proved too strong for Alex Wylie's side.

Joe Maddock, Nathan Mauger, Scott Hamilton (2), Charles Hore, Sam Broomhall, Ben Blair, Daniel Carter and Reece Williams dotted down for the visitors while Blair kicked six conversions.

Tau Fainga'anuku scored the only try for the Red Devils near the end of the game which Eddie Hekenui converted.
